Blog: Our archive system totally rawks

Blog: September 23rd, 2007

You know, with seven some years of comics on the site, finding a specific comic is becoming more needle in a haystack-like with each update. Even when I was on Keenspace (or whatever they’re calling it these days,) our archive system was never really anything to scream about. If you wanted to jump to that one comic about Family Guy, or the one with Bob Barker, you were pretty much forced to hunt it down through a giant calendar, one day at a time.

So I took a swing at re-designing the way WordPress handles our archives this weekend, and I think it turned out really nice. It’s visual: the page lays out the comics in any given category or tag like panes in a comic strip, left to right. Each category has a capsulized synopsis; a cool sort of mini-episode guide. If that’s not enough, you can really dig deep with the tags, tracking each appearance of Mort, Homestar Runner characters, etc. This also helps with the search function on every page, making it easier to pinpoint the comic you’re looking for. Any suggestions, please let me know in the comments.

Blog: Keepon Keepin’ On

Blog: September 20th, 2007

Note: Until I figure out how to change the RSS to put the category in the title of each update, I’ll be adding “blog” to the title of these posts. You know, just so you can tell when it’s a comic or blog update.

I’m a sucker for impractical applications of advanced technology. Battlebots, Mythbusters, robot soccer… anytime I see really smart people use their skills to come up with something lowbrow, they have my undivided attention. So that’s probably why this week’s comic features a little shout out to Keepon, a dancing robot programmed to listen to any given song and pull a beat from it.

Also worth seeing: Spoon, the band featured in the above demonstration, put Keepon in their recent music video.
I’d say it doesn’t take much to make me smile, but that’s probably a gross misunderstanding of mechanical engineering.

Back from Outer Space

Breakpoint City v4.0 is cursed, I tells ya! Nothing but bad luck since it’s launched. Think I’ve ironed out most of the snags: the tag system is working again, archives aren’t loading two comics at once, dogs and cats are not living together, insufficient hysteria all around.

How have we all been? Good? Good.

Reminder: Talk Like a Pirate Day is this Wednesday, one of two major holidays we regularly celebrate here on the site. Be sure to stop on by the boards and say arr.
